2010 Seminar Week at CCA
Each January CCA suspends the Upper School class schedule for one week of concentrated work on a single topic. The staff team chooses the topic and arranges the week’s events, all while keeping the plans a secret from the students. Seminar Weeks have become a highlight of each school year for staff and students alike as we try to find topics that engage students in a variety of ways.
This year the topic was the creation of a fifteen minute movie. The same story line—The Beauty and the Beast—was given to each group, but each group had to choose their setting and genre for their movies. Each group had to write a script, make the soundtrack, film the movie and create and distribute promotional materials for their movie. Soundtracks had to include at least one original song—which was recorded in the “Durrell Sound Studio” where staff members served as studio musicians. Lead actors and directors were interviewed on the “Joe and Glo Show” a morning talk show featuring our Headmaster Joe Sanelli and Dean of Students Gloria Stucky. For the show each team had to produce a 30-second movie trailer and they needed to talk about the film and the process.
The week concluded with the Covenant Awards Ceremony in the CCA Annex, with a gala lunch which preceded the screening of all the films and then awards were presented. The categories included best actor/actress in both leading and supporting roles, overall aesthetics, cinematography, costuming and makeup, editing, soundtrack, visual effects, screen play writing, publicity and best picture.
